information from the insurance team:

Clearinghouses – Why this Service is Essential

Imagine five or six million licensed healthcare professionals and facilities sending claims to over 2,200 different insurance carriers across fifty different states, with each insurance carrier having its own internal software system and each state having its own insurance regulations. This was the reality of the claim submission process a short time ago. The manpower required to handle the abundant calls for claim issues and errors presented a huge cost to health insurance, which individuals ultimately paid for in insurance premiums.

Then, the concept of electronic claims transmission entered the picture. In need of a method to transport claims from the provider to the insurance company, Medicare created electronic claim clearinghouses. Just as the U.S. Postal Service had handled delivery of paper claims, the clearinghouses would handle delivery of electronic claims, plus a little more.

Clearinghouses pre-screen claims for errors and offer other benefits, such as the following:

  • The ability to identify and correct errors in minutes rather than days or weeks, resulting in fewer rejected claims
  • Rapid claims processing with shorter reimbursement cycles, often ten days or less
  • Claim uploading for submitting several claims at once, rather than one at a time to each individual payer

VisionWeb offers a suite of insurance processing services that allow you to do all of these things and more. Click here to request additional information, or contact an Enrollment Consultant directly at (800) 590-0873 or sales@visionweb.com.

  2. Select "Group Level Access"
  3. Select the appropriate action from the drop-down menu to "Add" or "Remove" access, then choose the supplier account

in the news:

In the past, ODs have had to rely on manufacturers’ claims, patient feedback and anecdotal information when it comes to fitting PALS. In our feature article, “A Scientific Approach to PAL Options,” Dr. Glasser offers the findings of a series of studies of by James E. Sheedy, OD, PhD, dean of Pacific University College of Optometry.

Check out these two excerpts:

“Progressive addition lenses (PALs) are one of optometry’s mainstay workhorses. Patients generally prefer them to segmented multifocals, and they generate healthy growth for most practices. Still, there is plenty of room for improvement in how we prescribe these lenses, especially for patients who work on computers for prolonged periods… What we have lacked is peer-reviewed scientific data.

“Currently, there is no such thing as a perfect PAL, which would offer large distance, intermediate and near zones; a short corridor from distance to near; and minimal or no peripheral astigmatism. Lens technology has not advanced to the point at which all these are possible. When one optical characteristic is enhanced, another is diminished.

There is an almost unlimited number of ways to design a progressive lens. Dr. Sheedy and his colleagues measured 28 lens designs, using a Rotlex Class Plus lens analyzer to assess horizontal cross sections in 1mm vertical steps with respect to the fitting cross.”

coding tip:

From VisionWeb’s Coding Consulting Service
Earn Extra Cash, Monitor Time Between Visits

Don’t miss out on extra cash by incorrectly coding a new patient as an “established” patient. When a patient has not seen you, or another provider in your practice that is of the same specialty, within the last 3 years, he or she is considered a "new" patient. This is important because new patients generate higher reimbursement rates than established patients. Ensure that your staff monitors the amount of time that passes between patient visits, and then make sure that they bill the insurance carrier with the correct patient status so you receive the compensation you deserve.

Looking For More Help?
VisionWeb now offers a Coding Consulting Service to help your practice identify areas of opportunity to maximize claim reimbursement rates! Click here to learn more or contact a coding consultant at (866) 630-2036 or coding@visionweb.com.

More Women Losing Sight to Eye Disease than Men

Prevent Blindness America Urges Women to Help Protect their Vision with a Dilated Eye Exam

More women in America suffer from sight-stealing eye disease than men. According to an updated study from Prevent Blindness America and the National Eye Institute, more women will be diagnosed with cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, the four leading causes of vision loss and blindness.

Fortunately, vision loss can be minimized through early detection and treatment of eye diseases. Prevent Blindness America has designated April as Women’s Eye Health and Safety month in an effort to encourage women to make their eye health a priority today to save their sight for tomorrow.

For more information on eye disease or a listing of Prevent Blindness America services in your state, please visit www.preventblindness.org or call 1-800-331-2020.

Inventory Management
– Are you in Control?

Or is it controlling you?

Inventory management is essential to any business practice, large or small, for the simple reason that it will assist in taking control of invisible costs. The important factor is deciding what type of PM Software is best for your business, and understanding the additional benefits with SPEX UPC from FRAMES Data.

nullHaving just attended Vision Expo East, we asked attendees that weren’t currently using a Practice Management (PM) software how they were managing their inventory.  One common response to inventory management for smaller companies was that there were budget constraints.  However, the invisible costs associated by not managing inventory can cause bigger problems in both the short and long term.  A small investment in the beginning can save money by preventing hidden costs.

To make a strong PM Software system even more valuable, consider integration with business intelligence, electronic health records, and electronic data services.

null null null

SPEX UPC is one such electronic data service.  FRAMES Data has worked to integrate SPEX with the leading practice management systems to give you the power to manage your inventory and your business, with confidence.  SPEX UPC is a database of frame information, including frame style name, UPC code, sizes, colors, and up-to-date wholesale pricing on tens of thousands of styles. Once loaded, the data drives all of the pertinent functionality in the software’s frame inventory module.

Your SPEX UPC Advantage

Eliminating manual data entry. Improve efficiency and possible data entry errors.  SPEX UPC contains all of the product information you need, including pricing and UPC codes.

Ongoing inventory management. When a frame is sold or dispensed to a patient, the inventory level is automatically adjusted.

Inventory on demand. Maintain accurate, profitable inventory control.  The inventory level is kept current with updated pricing delivered every month.

Retail price setting. Most PM software allows a retail price to be automatically generated using pre-set markups. SPEX UPC enables this to happen automatically and without error.

Your SPEX UPC subscription includes 12 monthly issues of SPEX UPC containing the most up-to-date product and pricing information, and a complimentary 12 month membership to FRAMES Online at www.framesdata.com.
