VisionWeb Sponsors AOA Practice Enrichment and Membership Initiatives
We are excited to announce our latest sponsorship agreement with the AOA, which you may have read about in VMail last month. Under the terms of this agreement, we will be lending our support for AOA initiatives to drive membership and participation in practice-building programs through 2009. We are dedicated to supporting independent optometry and we are proud to be working with the AOA on this important effort.
AOSafety’s 2nd Annual Optician Advisory Board Meeting Recap
We were honored when Aearo, one of our largest independent laboratory customers, invited us to be a sponsor and participant at their annual Optician Advisory Board Meeting this year in San Antonio. About 80 opticians from across the country joined the Aearo team to learn more about products and services to help them dispense safety lenses. VisionWeb representative, Brad Roney was on hand at the event to present information on ordering safety lenses through VisionWeb and using practice management integrations. Thanks to everyone who attended. We look forward to participating in the event again next year.

Know Your Provider ID Numbers
We strive to make insurance claim filing a smooth and successful process. And lately, submitting claims with the correct provider ID numbers has become increasingly important. To help ensure that your claims have the proper numbers, we suggest creating a table that lists all of these numbers so that they are readily accessible. Here is an example:

This table is filled with arbitrary numbers, but it includes all of the types of numbers we believe you should have on hand. We listed the NPI numbers closest to the providers’ names since those are the standard numbers to use now that you have been through the transition to NPI. And while the NPI implementation was meant to eliminate the need for various other identification numbers, it is possible that you may be asked for your UPIN by some payers so we want you to keep it listed. You can also see that we included “Legacy Number” on this table, which might not seem familiar. “Legacy Number” refers to old identification numbers used by payers to identify groups or individuals, prior to the implementation of NPI. The NPI implementation didn’t completely do away with those old numbers and you may find that you need them on occasion. We suggest that you keep all of these on hand, “just in case.”
VisionWeb offers a suite of insurance processing services that allow you to do all of these things and more. Click here to request additional information, or contact an Enrollment Consultant directly at (800) 590-0873 or sales@visionweb.com. |

Research and product development for cataract surgery have been helping in the advancement and improvement of this procedure. In Cataract: Better Results During and After Surgery, Mark H. Blecher, MD, explores many of the new developments that have come about in the last year by presenting a synopsis of several different clinical studies such as the example below.
“What predicts clinically significant macular edema following cataract surgery? Numerous anecdotal risk factors have been proposed, but no evidence-based studies exist, say Canadian researchers. To identify predictors in patients with and without glaucoma, they conducted a retrospective review of 697 patient files in a glaucoma practice at a tertiary-care setting in London, Ontario. The rate of CME was 1.3 percent for the entire data set and 2.3 percent for the glaucoma-medication subgroup. For the entire data set, multivariate analysis found four variables to be strongly associated with clinically significant CME (p=0.05). These independent predictors, with their adjusted odds ratio:
- Preop topical fixed combination beta-blocker and carbonic anhydrase inhibitor (i.e. Cosopt)-OR 10.7
- Intraoperative pupil stretching-OR 20.4
- Intraoperative PMMA intraocular lens implant-OR 65.7
- Postop topical prostaglandin-OR 8.5
Based upon these predictors, they derived a scoring system to determine absolute risk and risk level (i.e. low, moderate, and high risk). For the glaucoma medication subgroup, two variables that were strongly associated with clinically significant CME:
- Preoperative topical fixed combination beta-blocker & carbonic anhydrase inhibitor (i.e. Cosopt)-OR 6.9
- Intraoperative pupil stretching-OR 14.7.5462

Save Time with the "Archived Orders" Feature
Keeping information for your completed VisionWeb orders in your order status page may increase the amount of time it takes to access your order status page. You can "archive" these completed orders electronically on VisionWeb so that they don't slow you down. This will ensure that your order history is there when you need it, and out of the way when you don't. Here's how to archive your orders:
- Log in to www.visionweb.com and select Order Status from the navigation bar.
- From the list of orders, select those you wish to archive by clicking in the check box to the left of each order.
- To archive the selected orders, click on the “Archive Selected” button.
To retrieve an order that's been archived, navigate to the Archived Orders page. Then you can find your archived orders by a variety of search criteria, including order number, patient name, supplier, or date range. Now, your Order Status pages contain only those orders that are currently in process.

Dear VisionWeb Members,
I am excited to announce that after 23 fantastic years in the eyecare industry, I will be retiring at the end of August. In my career, I have experienced the joy of caring for patients in my private practice, the thrill of working with Vistakon to successfully launch the disposable contact lens concept, and the honor of helping my colleagues to improve the way they do business through the use of technology.
And, it has been especially rewarding to work with VisionWeb where the collective goal is to improve the profession of eyecare. My sincere hope is that all of you will continue to embrace VisionWeb’s services and help your colleagues become more successful by sharing the ways that VisionWeb has positively affected your practice.
I want to thank you and all of my many colleagues for your ongoing support and dedication to helping the eyecare industry reach its full potential. My retirement is the culmination of an exhilarating career and I am anxious to embark on my life’s next big adventure.

Fireworks Continue to be a Dangerous Part of Fourth of July Festivities
National Non-Profit Offers Tips on Celebrating Independence Day Safely
Last year, approximately 6,400 Americans spent part of their Fourth of July holiday in the emergency room, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Sadly, children ages 15 and younger make up a significant number of fireworks injuries, accounting for 36 percent. For children under the age of 5, a third of the total injuries were from sparklers. Many parents may not be aware that sparklers can burn up to 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit.
For a free copy of the Safe Summer Celebrations brochure or other fireworks safety information, including the Prevent Blindness America Fireworks Position Statement, please call 1-800-331-2020 or log onto www.preventblindness.org.
